Guardian Angels For Soldier's Pet is an all volunteer organization, 501 (c) (3) nonprofit Federal Tax Exempt public charity. It was co-founded by two women who were members of Soldiers' Angels, a website of fabulous people who want to show their support of our military by "adopting soldiers", and sending them cards, letters and care packages. Co-founders, Carole Olmeda and Linda Spurlin-Dominik, realized that there was a need to help find temporary, loving homes for the soldier's beloved pet or pets, while they were deployed, when an article appeared in the Sentinel Record about a January 2005 deployment in Georgia. 19,000 soldiers were deployed to fight the war on terror, and many had to leave their pets behind and no one to care for them. The local animal control officers picked up 321 abandoned animals, where 119 had to be euthanized because homes could not be found to take the pets in.
Initially, G.A.S.P. was established within the state of Arkansas. Based on the requests that came in, it was quickly determined that the organization needed to expand the availablity of this program to other states. Currently there are two affiliated chapters in Minnesota and Mississippi, and other chapters are forming.
Guardian Angels For Soldier's Pets Objectives:
1. Establish a network of foster home families through Foster Home coordinators in each state.
2.Establish a network with various military locations, Family Readiness Groups (FRG's), military based veterinarians, volunteer pet transport groups, and other military support organizations.
3. Establish "State Foster Home Coordinators" in all states to help recruit and interview potential foster home caregivers within their states/areas.
4. Form G.A.S.P, approved "Affiliated" Chapters in states with deploying military bases.
5. Establish and maintain the first Guardian Angels For Soldier's Pets "Military Veterans Pet" (MVP) Sanctuary in Arkansas to ensure that there is a caring. loving, and safe home-like environment for these pets when individual foster home caregivers are not available.
